Light Lock Darkroom Entrance

The diagram shows a plan layout of a light lock for the entrance and exit from a student darkroom. The light lock has a black coated interior to absorb the outside white light and stop it entering the darkroom.

The arrows represent the air flow allowed by a light lock darkroom entrance (no doors or curtains) in combination with a correct light-tight ventilation fan system to create that ‘fresh as a daisy’ atmosphere for a healthy student darkroom.

Light Lock Darkroom Entrance

A light lock entrance provides a very convenient way for students to enter or depart from the darkroom without continually opening and closing the door thereby interrupting the use of the darkroom. Curtains have been used to minimise the problem but it is well known that they impede air flow and gather dust.

An open ‘light lock’ without curtains is the answer providing a very important requirement for a healthy, odour free, ‘fresh as a daisy’ student darkroom. A well designed light lock continually allows air to enter through an open door which, in turn, ensures that the exhaust fans are removing the maximum volume of air from the room.
